Joe Sundgren

Assistant Coach & Billet Coordinator

Joe Sundgren serves as the Assistant Coach and Billet Coordinator for the Austin Ice Bats. A native of the Austin area, Joe brings both coaching experience and player development expertise to the organization. Before joining the Ice Bats, he played NCAA Division III hockey at St. Olaf College in Minnesota and coaches emphasizing skills training and athlete growth.

As the team’s Billet Coordinator, Joe oversees the placement and support of players with local host families, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment throughout the season. His dual role allows him to guide players both on and off the ice—helping them excel in competition while adjusting to life away from home.

Joe is also the founder of X-Factor Hockey, where he continues to train athletes across youth, junior, collegiate, and professional levels in the Austin area. His commitment to player development and community ties make him an integral part of the Ice Bats organization.

 

 

Danny Dykstra

Assistant Coach

Danny Dykstra serves as an Assistant Coach for the Austin Ice Bats. Originally from Western New York, Danny played AAA hockey for the Wheatfield Blades before continuing his career at SUNY Fredonia, where he competed in ACHA hockey.

He began his coaching career as an Assistant Coach with the University of Texas at Austin’s ACHA hockey program while completing graduate studies. During his tenure, he helped transform the Longhorns from a one-win season into a nationally competitive program. His experience rebuilding teams and developing collegiate players has shaped his approach to leadership, skill development, and team culture.

With the Ice Bats, Danny works alongside the coaching staff to design practices, develop players, and prepare athletes for the next level of junior hockey. His blend of playing experience, academic discipline, and proven coaching success makes him an invaluable member of the Austin Ice Bats organization.
